Description

Force, Motion, Power, The essence of the universe, and therefore of us.  No matter that many machines have exceeded the power of steam locomotives, no matter that the roaring exhausts and towering columns of smoke and steam meant in the thermodynamic sense a loss of power rather than the generation of it.  What mattered was that the steam locomotive used the four great elements of earth, water, air and fire to produce power in a way that could be directly and intimately seen, heard, felt, experienced.  There was no refinement in this process to water down its elemental nature.  Raw energy was hurled into white hot flames, the brute force of high pressure steam moved the pistons which drove huge wheels via massive rods, and you felt it all.
There was multiform movement - the spinning wheels, the flashing rods and motion, the steam and smoke shooting from the chimney, the coming, passing by and going away of the train were all of the nature of movement, the ultimate expression of freedom and the very nature of life itself.
And the steam locomotive had a voice which came from its heart, enchanting the listener with the mystery of its music and with the tales of struggle and triumph which it told, a mantra in rhythm and tone.
In short, the steam locomotive was a manifestation in forms of fundamental formless qualities which were displayed when the locomotive was in motion and lay latent within it when at rest.  There have been other things in the world which have had elements of the same qualities but none to the extent or degree that the steam locomotive had.  Its very imperfections made it perfect, gave it an all-important spiritual dimension, and it was no wonder that conciousness perceived in the steam locomotive something far transcending its utilitarian function, a powerful symbol for a higher reality and something for which those who became one with it had an affinity that did not have to be taught and needed no explanation and which too was perfect - an experience of harmony with something deep and unseen within themselves.

Unfortunately, most are not in tune with this wavelength and what I am writing will be lost on them.

Reminds me of a scene from a very old book, I think set somewhere down in Africa, (or was it India), big book too, but I'll never forget seeing those images of sparks, almost like fireworks. Tis a machine that has to be understood on it's own terms.
