Let it be known the reason you see belts present as well as a "motor control switch" is because the switch is not a motor control switch. Don't ask why, but the power input is from the belt and is always rotating in one direction (presumably driven by a steam engine in an adjoining building) Drive reverse/decoupling/braking for the lathe itself is done with an electromagnetically operated set of friction clutches controlled by this switch. Weird, right?

So, what's the bed length and maximum swing on this thing? Can it handle taking cuts in various steels of .125"-.250" or more per pass with a total OD reduction of .250"-.500" per pass if fitted with a tool bit that can handle such cuts?
